Jean Cugnot (born August 3, 1899 in Paris , † June 25, 1933 in Vincennes ) was a French track cyclist and Olympic champion.
Career
In 1923 Jean Cugnot won the sprint tournament Grand Prix de Paris among the amateurs , the following year he finished second in this race and third in the Grand Prix de l'UVF . In 1924 he started in two disciplines at the Olympic Games in Paris . In tandem races he won the gold medal together with Lucien Choury , in the sprint bronze.
Then Cugnot turned professional and started u. a. in 13 six-day races . On June 23, 1933, Jean Cugnot had a serious crash while racing at the Vélodrome de Vincennes and died a few days later of the consequences of a fractured skull.
His death was the reason for the French cycling federation Union Vélocipédique Française (UVF) to introduce mandatory crash caps for rail riders from August 1, 1933 and for road riders from January 1, 1934 .
