Igor Vasilyevich Zelowalnikow ( Russian Игорь Васильевич Целовальников ; Ukrainian Ігор Васильович Целовальников Ihor Wassyljowytsch Zelowalnykow ; * 2. January 1944 in Yerevan ; † 1. March 1976 or 1. March 1986 ) was a cyclist from the former Soviet Union and Olympic champion in cycling .

Athletic career

Zelowalnikow (in German-speaking countries also Tschelowalnikow), who started cycling in 1961, came out internationally for the first time with second place at the Copenhagen Grand Prix in 1968 (he was third in 1969). That year he was one of six candidates from the Soviet Cycling Federation for the tandem competition at the Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City . This group of drivers started in June 1968 at the Grand Prix of the GDR . With his victory in this sprinter award he qualified for the Olympics. With his partner Imants Bodnieks (who took second place in the Grand Prix of the GDR) he came in 5th place in the Olympic tandem competition. At the games four years later in Munich he won the gold medal on the tandem with his partner Wladimir Semenez (ahead of Werner Otto and Jürgen Geschke from the GDR). The year before, both had finished fourth at the UCI World Track Championships . In 1968 he also won a national title. At the Soviet track championships, he won the 1000-meter time trial before the favored Viktor Agapov . In the sprint he was runner-up behind Omar Pchakadze .
