Alfonso Lombardi

Alfonso Lombardi (* approx. 1497 in Ferrara , † 1537 in Bologna ), also Lombardi da Lucca , Alfonso da Ferrara and Alfonso Lombardo , was an Italian sculptor .

Giorgio Vasari dedicated a chapter to him in his work Le Vite delle più eccellenti pittori, scultori, ed architettori .

Lombardi's sculptural group Death of the Virgin (1522) in the oratory of the Church of Santa Maria della Vita in Bologna. It shows the twelve apostles around the coffin of the Virgin in 15 larger than life figures.

A formally comparable group of sculptures, the Lamentation of Christ by Niccolò dell'Arca , can be found in the church next to the oratory.
