Bologna Cathedral

The Cathedral of San Pietro in Bologna is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Bologna . It is on Via Indipendenza .
history
A church already existed in 1028, as evidenced by a pre-Romanesque bell tower with a circular floor plan (based on the model of Ravenna ). The church was destroyed in the major fire of 1141 and by Pope Lucius III. rebuilt and rededicated in 1184.
In 1396 the facade was enriched by a portico (columned vestibule), which was renovated in 1467.
By order of Cardinal Gabriele Paleotti , the building was completely renovated in 1575. However, the interventions were so radical that the vaults collapsed in 1599.
1582 was San Pietro by Pope Gregory XIII. raised to the cathedral.
The portico was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century and was given a new facade between 1743 and 1747 by order of Pope Benedict XIV according to plans by the architect Alfonso Torreggiani .
Furnishing
Today the interior shows itself in a baroque style of majestic effect. Among the works of art are the Annunciation by Ludovico Carracci , a fresco between the rear glass windows of the crossing, a Romanesque crucifix made of cedar wood and a group of figures made of clay Cristo morto con le Marie piangenti (Dead Christ with Weeping Women) by Alfonso Lombardi (beginning of the 16th century ) . Century).
Organs
There are two large organs in the cathedral . The organ on the west stand was built in 1935 by the organ builder Giuseppe Rotelli (Cremona). The instrument has 49 stops on three manuals and pedal (works) . The special thing is that each manual is assigned an independent pedal unit. The actions are electro-pneumatic.
