Giro d'Italia 1988
The 71st Giro d'Italia was held in 23 sections and 3579 kilometers from May 23 to June 12, 1988 and won by the American Andrew Hampsten . Of the 180 riders who started, 125 reached the finish in Vittorio Veneto .
The round trip on the 14th stage to Bormio , which led over the 2,618 meter high Passo di Gavia , was pre-decided . In snowfall and temperatures below zero degrees, Johan van der Velde was the first to pass the top of the pass, but lost a lot of time because he had to warm up several times. The later stage winner Erik Breukink and the later overall winner were the next at the top of the pass and took away the co-favorites for several minutes after the end of the descent to the finish.
