The 29th Giro d'Italia , the "Giro della Rinascita" took place from June 15 to July 7, 1946. The bike race consisted of 17 stages with a total length of 3,039 kilometers. It was in the shadow of the Second World War and Italy was still suffering heavily from the consequences of the war. The duel between Bartali and Coppi shaped this Giro. 40 of 79 starters reached the finish.

Gino Bartali won the Giro ahead of Fausto Coppi . Gino Bartali also won the mountain classification. Team Benotto won the team competition .
