Vito Ortelli

Vito Ortelli (born July 5, 1921 in Faenza , Emilia-Romagna ; † February 24, 2017 in ibid.) Was an Italian cyclist .

Career

Vito Ortelli was already very successful as an amateur , so that he was nicknamed "Il Binda dei dilettanti" (= "the binda of amateurs"). In 1940, the year he switched to professional drivers, he won the Giro della provincia Milano , together with Fiorenzo Magni , which was also his first victory as a professional driver.

Ortelli was a professional cyclist from 1940 to 1952 . During this time he won a total of 15 bike races. In 1942 he won the Giro della Toscana and in 1945 and 1946 Milan – Turin . In 1945 and 1946 he was also Italian champion in the single pursuit on the track . In 1947 he won the Giro del Piemonte and was second in the Italian road championship and the national championship in the pursuit. In 1948 Ortelli became Italian road champion and won the Giro di Romagna . In 1949 he was second from Milan – Sanremo .

At the Giro d'Italia 1946 Ortelli took third place in the overall standings, won one stage and wore the Maglia Rosa for five stages ; In 1948 he finished fourth and also wore pink for five days. Towards the end of his career, Ortelli was banned for three months for hanging himself on a car at the Giro dell'Emilia in 1952. It turned out that Ortelli had swapped bib numbers with the Swiss Carlo Clerici , and he was rehabilitated. At the UCI Road World Championships in 1948 he was 8.

Vito Ortelli was one of the founders of the Italian professional racing driver association ACCPI ( Associazione Corridori Ciclisti Professionisti Italiani ), where he was involved for around 40 years. Since the death of Cesare Del Cancia in April 2011, he was the oldest living bearer of the Maglia Rosa.

Professional

After his career as a cyclist, he began to work in his father's workshop and bicycle shop in Faenza, where he continued to build bicycles until the early 1980s.
