Machelen is a municipality in the arrondissement of Halle-Vilvoorde in the province of Flemish Brabant ( Flanders region ) in Belgium . Mayor is Marc Grootjans.

The EURid organization is located in the Diegem sub-municipality .

geography

The municipality is located about 9 km northeast of Brussels on the R0 motorway ring (ring around Brussels). It has a population of 15,469 (as of January 1, 2019) and an area of ​​11.59 km². The area of ​​Machelen is 6.1 km², that of the associated sub-municipality Diegem an additional 5.5 km².

history

Machelen was first mentioned in 1179 as Machala . Today's municipality was created in 1977 from the merger of the municipalities Machelen and Diegem.
