EURid (an acronym for European Registry of Internet Domain Names ) is a non-profit organization based in Diegem near Brussels , Belgium . Further offices are located in Stockholm , Pisa and Prague . EURid is responsible for the operational and technical operation of the top-level domain .eu .

history

The EURid was brought into being by the EU regulation 733/2002 of April 22, 2002, with which a framework for the introduction of the top-level domain .eu was created. The European Commission should then appoint a registrar in an "open, transparent and non-discriminatory selection process" who should take over the operational management of the extension. In May 2003 it became known that EURid was finally able to prevail in the tender against EUDR and other applicants.

The Communication Committee of the European Union approved the award criteria for the new top-level domain in March 2004. It was therefore initially planned to introduce .eu in November 2004. However, ICANN did not agree to the introduction of .eu until March 2005, so that the entire process was delayed by several years. The consulting company PricewaterhouseCoopers was commissioned by EURid to monitor the so-called sunrise period .

In July 2005, EURid began to accredit registrars for .eu for the first time . The actual allocation started on December 7, 2005: In the first step, owners of registered trademarks and public institutions could register .eu domains, in the second sunrise period also companies for their company names and others. Public registration has been possible since April 2006.

EURid has also managed the Cyrillic variant .ею since 2016.

meaning

Two years after the introduction of .eu , EURid reported a portfolio of 2.8 million domains and an average of 2,500 new addresses a day. In 2008, EURid was one of the ten largest network information centers in the world. In addition, EURid has an above-average rate of renewals.

criticism

In September 2006 EURid came under fire when the domain name servers failed during the introduction of .eu . A short time later, the so-called EPP server, which was responsible for the actual allocation , also caused problems. Experts and hosters spoke of a series of breakdowns that could have been avoided with sufficient preparation.
