Rudolf Guby (born October 4, 1888 in Passau ; † June 6, 1929 in Vienna ) was an important Passau art historian and local researcher and in 1926 one of the founding fathers of the Institute for East Bavarian Local History .

Life

Youth and job

The future art historian was born in 1888 as the son of Kommerzialrat Rudolf Guby († 1927) and his wife Johanna († 1944) in Passau , where he attended grammar school until 1908 and graduated successfully. He then devoted himself to studying law, history and art history at the University of Vienna . He achieved the first in 1913 with a doctorate in Dr. iur. end, but the end of the war and, above all, the collapse of Austria-Hungary in 1918 prevent the formal completion of a doctorate in art history. Guby was a trainee lawyer at the Higher Regional Court in Vienna until December 22, 1914 . Because of his (congenital) heart condition, which was already relatively pronounced at that time, Guby also escaped being called up to the Austro-Hungarian military service and thus serving as a soldier in the events of the First World War . From February 1, 1915, he worked in the Rector's Office of the University of Vienna until - after the final completion of his studies - on June 9, 1920, he was appointed Section Council in the state photo office at the Vienna State Chancellery. However, five years later, on October 31, 1925, Guby (meanwhile appointed director of the photo office) had to retire from active duty; because of his worsening heart condition he will be put into permanent retirement.

Working during retirement

However, his retirement did not prevent him from continuing to pursue two of his greatest passions: the (south) east Bavarian-Austrian art history and Passau local history, of which he can definitely be counted among the pioneers. During this time Guby also created the recognized standard work of old Bavarian art history on the art monuments of the Innviertel and, not to be forgotten, became one of the founding fathers of the Institute for East Bavarian Local History in 1926. For the winter semester of 1928/1929, Guby was given a teaching position for art history both at the University of Vienna and at the Philosophical-Theological University of Passau .

Death and inheritance

On the evening of June 6, 1929, Dr. Guby unexpectedly and suddenly suffered from the consequences of his heart condition after a severe flu. One of his obituaries said: “He seemed happy to have gotten over [the flu]. As soon as he felt able to work again, he took up the institute's affairs and scientific work with an unbroken spirit of enterprise [...]. But the recovery did not last. After a short break, the disease attacked him lately and now all the more severe. The relapse was all the more serious as Dr. Guby was burdened with a serious organic heart defect [...]. However, it came unexpectedly when, on the night of June 6th to 7th, a cardiac paralysis gently extinguished his life. ”The scientist found his final resting place in Passau-Innstadt in his father's grave. Guby "despite his relatively short life [...] as an art historian and researcher of the Bavarian-Austrian homeland history created an unusually rich and mature life's work that still exists today."
