Bart Wellens (born August 10, 1978 in Herentals ) is a former Belgian cyclist and four-time cross world champion .

Career

Bart Wellens concentrated on the cross discipline . His greatest successes are the two elite world championships , which he won in 2003 and 2004 in Monopoli and in Pontchâteau , after having previously won the U23 title twice. In 2006 he finished second behind his compatriot and teammate Erwin Vervecken . He also won numerous Belgian championship titles and the overall ranking of the Cross World Cup in 2002/2003 .

After Wellens hit a spectator at the Vlaamse Druivenveldrit Overijse who, according to Wellens, insulted him and sprinkled him with beer, his victory in the race was denied.

After Wellens was suspected of having carried out illegal ozone therapy in the course of doping investigations , his nomination for the 2015 cross world championships was canceled by the Belgian association.

Wellens was the star of the documentary soap Wellens en Wee on the Flemish channel VT4 . He is shown there in his daily life with his parents and teammates. He currently lives in Londerzeel .

His brother Geert is also a cross rider. He has been married to Lentel De Hertog since 2008 and has been the father of daughter Lily since 2009.

In March 2015, he announced the end of his career.
