Rebecca "Becky" Angharad James (born November 19, 1991 in Abergavenny , Wales ) is a former Welsh cyclist .
Athletic career
Rebecca James specialized in the short-term disciplines of track cycling . In 2010 she became European sprint champion (youngsters) in Saint Petersburg and won silver in the 500 meter time trial . At the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010 , she was second in the sprint and third in the time trial. At the UCI Track World Championships 2011 in Apeldoorn , she finished ninth in the sprint and seventh in the time trial.
In 2009 James was two-time junior world champion in Moscow, in the sprint and in the keirin . During this World Cup, on August 13, 2009, she set a junior world record over 200 meters flying with 11.093 seconds. At the UCI Track World Championships 2013 in Minsk , Rebecca James was world champion in sprint and keirin; in the team sprint she finished third together with Victoria Williamson as well as in the time trial. This made her the most successful female athlete at these world championships.
The following year, Rebecca James had cancer surgery on her abdomen , after which she suffered a serious knee injury, so that the continuation of her career was in doubt. She made her comeback at the UCI Track World Championships in London in 2016 and won the bronze medal in the Keirin. In the same year she was nominated for participation in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where she won the silver medal in the Keirin.
In August 2017, Becky James, who had not raced since the Olympics, announced her retirement from competitive cycling. Her health problems and the controversies surrounding Technical Director Shane Sutton , which led to his resignation and whose protégé she was, are believed to be the reasons . According to her announcement, she now wants to turn her passion for baking wedding and birthday cakes into a profession.
Honors
In 2010 James was nominated for the BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year election and finished second behind soccer player Gareth Bale . In 2013 she was voted “Junior Sportswoman of the Year” in Great Britain.
