Shane Edwin Sutton , OBE , (born March 22, 1957 in Moree ) is a former Australian cyclist and later British cycling trainer .

Cycling career

In 1978 Shane Sutton won two medals at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton , gold in the team pursuit with Colin Fitzgerald , Kevin Nichols and his brother Gary, and silver in the scratch race over ten miles.

From 1980 to 1994 Sutton was active as a professional racing driver. In 1983 he won the Australian Herald Sun Tour and was third in the Australian Road Championship. In 1984 he went to Great Britain, won the Midland's Tour in 1985 and started the Tour de France in 1987 , but had to give up after the 13th stage. In 1990 he won the Milk Race and finished third in the British Road Championship in 1993. Sutton also started in four six-day races, of which he won three: 1982 he won in Launceston with Phil Sawyer , 1983 in Melbourne with brother Gary and 1984 again in Launceston with Geoff Skaines .

Sutton as a trainer

After retiring as a cyclist in 1994, Sutton became the Welsh national cycling coach. In 2002 he switched to the British Association (BC) as a trainer and also looked after Team Sky until the beginning of 2013 . In 2014, he succeeded David Brailsford as Technical Director of BC, while the German Heiko Salzwedel took over his position as trainer for endurance train drivers .

1998 Sutton was in Wales for Coach of the Year chosen and 2008 because of the success of its athletes at the Olympic Games in Beijing for Coach of the Year in the UK. In 2010 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire .

In November 2012, he was hit by a car while riding a bicycle in Manchester and suffered head injuries, but has recovered. The doctor told him that his helmet had saved his life. Just a few hours earlier, his long-time protégé Bradley Wiggins , in whose success Sutton is credited with a large share, had a bicycle accident.

In the summer of 2013, Sutton was quoted in various British newspapers when he said that Wiggins was in a crisis because he was almost overwhelmed by his tour success the previous year and now has to set new goals.

In March 2016, Shane Sutton was attacked by several members of the British Cycling team over the nomination practice for the 2016 Olympics . The following month, drivers Jessica Varnish , Victoria Pendleton and Nicole Cooke alleged sexist statements against him . Shortly thereafter, Sutton was suspended by the British Federation because there were further allegations, including multiple Paralympics medalist Darren Kenny , that he had called Paralympic cyclists among other things "gimps" and "wobblies" (meaning "cripples"). In an interview with the Daily Mail , the former reported Malaysian cyclist Josiah Ng that Sutton getting him Boatie called and thus with respect to the boat people have taken, there to seek asylum traveling by ship from Asia to Australia by boat. Ng: “His actions are racists, but I personally don't think he's racist.” (“He acts like a racist, but personally I don't think he's a racist.”) He thinks Sutton used the term “boatie “I meant lovingly without realizing how offensive it was.

British Cycling said the allegations should now be investigated through a trial. Shane Sutton then submitted his resignation as Technical Director on April 27, 2016. In an interview in May 2016, former cyclist and Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton stated that Sutton played a major role in her retirement from cycling. In October 2017, Sutton signed a contract to coach the national rail team of China .

family

Sutton is the brother of former racing driver and now Australian trainer Gary Sutton , his nephew is cyclist Christopher Sutton .
