Gary John Sutton (born March 27, 1955 in Sydney ) is an Australian cycling coach and former Australian cyclist .
Athletic career
In 1974 Gary Sutton won two silver medals at the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch , New Zealand , one in the singles pursuit and one in the team pursuit . The following year he became an Australian Master of the Amateurs in the road race. He won a gold medal in the team pursuit at the 1978 Commonwealth Games (with Colin Fitzgerald , Shane Sutton and Kevin Nichols ). In 1980 he became world champion in the amateur points race . In 1981 Sutton took second place in the overall ranking of the Tour of Eastern Switzerland . Twice - in 1976 in the single pursuit and in 1980 in the team pursuit - he started at the Olympic Games and finished sixth both times.
In 1982, Gary Sutton became a professional after becoming vice world champion in the amateurs' points race , and in 1983 he finished third as a professional at the World Track Championships in the same discipline. In 1984 and 1989 he finished second again in the points race. Gary Sutton also started four times in six-day races, in 1983 he won the Melbourne race with his brother Shane . On the road, he was mostly successful in domestic races, such as in 1985 when he won the Canberra Tour .
1991 Sutton resigned from active cycling and worked from then on as a trainer. Until 2017 he worked as a coach for the Australian Cycling Federation. After 27 years, his contract, which ended on June 30, 2017, was not renewed. He moved to USA Cycling as a trainer of the endurance track team .
