Sir David John "Dave" Brailsford , CBE , (born February 29, 1964 in Shardlow , Derbyshire ) is a British cycling trainer and manager .

Early years

Dave Brailsford was born in England , but grew up in Deiniolen near Caernarfon in Wales , which is why he also speaks Welsh . In his youth he played football enthusiastically , but had to give up the sport because he injured his knee. Therefore, he turned to cycling. He broke off an apprenticeship as a draftsman in order to cycle to France. Although he didn't speak a word of French, he was taken on by a semi-professional team, for which he drove for three years. At the age of 23 he returned to the UK to study sports science and psychology at Chester College of Higher Education . He then did his Master of Business Administration at the University of Sheffield Management School .

Professional career

Brailsford was initially in 1996 at the British Cycling Federation British Cycling hired as a consultant, as the support of the National Lottery began. The association moved into its offices at the Manchester Velodrome , and Brailsford became program director and then performance director . Numerous British riders have achieved success under his leadership, including Chris Hoy , Bradley Wiggins , Geraint Thomas , Jason Kenny , Victoria Pendleton , Mark Cavendish and Laura Trott . He led the British team successfully at the Olympic Games 2004 in Athens , in 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London . Under his leadership, the British track cycling team became the most successful in sporting history.

In 2010 Brailsford also became the manager of the new British professional team Sky . Under his direction, Bradley Wiggins won the 2012 Tour de France and Chris Froome won the Tour the following year. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , he led the cycling teams in all disciplines of Great Britain and Northern Ireland , which eventually topped the medal table.

In April 2014, David Brailsford resigned from his post as director of British Cycling to focus on his work at Sky .

Honors

Dave Brailsford was named a member of the Order of the British Empire in 2005 and Commander in 2009. In 2012, he was for his services at the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Summer Games in 2012 to the Knights defeated.

The British success at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing with 14 medals, including 8 gold, led to Brailsford winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Coach Award in December 2008; In 2012 he received this award a second time. In November 2010 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Chester , where he had studied. In October 2016 he was inducted into the British Cycling Hall of Fame .
