The Manchester Velodrome is a hall with a built-in cycle track that opened in September 1994. UCI track world championships of the elite were held there three times ( as of 2020 ).

The construction of the Manchester Velodrome £ 9.5 million ; The city of Manchester is responsible for this . The track was designed by Ron Webb , the building by FaulknerBrowns Architects . The track is 250 meters long and is made of Siberian spruce . The Velodrome is the “National Cycling Center” and the seat of the British Association, British Cycling, and is therefore the first address for track cycling in Great Britain. There is space for 3500 spectators in the stands. The hall can also be used for other sports such as basketball , badminton and netball .

From March to May 2018, the slats of the cycling track were replaced with new ones. The old slats were donated to the charity organization Emerge , which sold them for a good cause.

Cycling events

Since opening, the Manchester Velodrome has hosted numerous international cycling events. In 1996 , 2000 and 2008 the UCI track world championships were held here as well as races of the track cycling world cup , several times the " Masters World Championships " for senior track drivers and national track championships. In 2002, the velodrome hosted the 2002 Commonwealth Games track cycling competitions . Racing evenings of the Revolution series are held several times a year .

Records

In 1996 local hero Chris Boardman set a new record in the single pursuit over 4000 meters in Manchester with 4: 11.114 minutes; nine days later he renewed the hour record there with 56.375 kilometers and trumped the previous record holder Tony Rominger from Switzerland by one kilometer. On October 27, 2000, Boardman again set a world hour record of 49.441 kilometers on a conventional track bike after the Union Cycliste Internationale had canceled all records, including the Boardmans of 1996, which had been set on aerodynamically built bikes.

On 27 March 2008, the British introduced train of four ( Ed Clancy , Geraint Thomas , Paul Manning and Bradley Wiggins ) a new world record (3: 56.322 minutes) in front of a home crowd on.

A total of around 15 world records (as of October 2011) have been set on the track.

Other events

On July 2nd, 2009 the group " Kraftwerk " gave a concert at the Manchester Velodrome . During the performance of their song "Tour de France", four track cyclists from the British Olympic team circled the track.
