Caernarfon (formerly Caernarvon , pronounced: kairnarvon) is a small town in north-west Wales . Located on the Menai Strait across from Anglesey Island, it is the unofficial capital of North Wales. The place goes back to a Roman fort from the 1st century AD.

Surname

The name means "castle (caer) in Arfon", Arfon (ar Fôn) itself means "across from Môn ( Anglesey )". The conversion of "m" into an "f" (spoken like a "w") after certain prepositions (here ar "auf") is one of the peculiarities of the Welsh language ( initial mutations ).

Castle

The center of the village is dominated by the massive Caernarfon Castle , one of the most famous historical fortresses in Great Britain.

Culture

A large part of the town's residents speak Welsh , the second official language of the country. Caernarfon is also a center of Welsh culture. The traditional Eisteddfod , a folk festival of literature, poetry and music, has taken place here repeatedly since 1862. The Caernarfon Town football team comes from Caernarfon .
