Overview
Summer games
In 1936 in Berlin five swimmers from Bermuda took part in the Olympic Games. Leonard Spence was the first Olympic athlete in Bermuda on August 8, 1936 in the 100 meter freestyle run. In 1948 in London track and field athletes and water divers took part for the first time. Bermudian women also made their Olympic debut in London. The first Olympians were on July 31, 1948 Phyllis Lightbourn-Jones and Phyllis Edness in the 100-meter run.
In 1956 in Melbourne, 1960 in Rome and 1964 in Tokyo, the Olympic teams consisted only of sailors. The Oleander XII took 5th place in the kite class in 1964. Boxing and rowing were added in 1972 for Bermuda. In 1976 in Montreal the Bermuda's first and so far only medal win could be celebrated. The boxer Clarence Hill won the bronze medal in the heavyweight division. Bermuda followed the US call for a boycott and stayed away from the 1980 Moscow Games.
In Los Angeles in 1984, Bermudian riders and cyclists took part for the first time. In the tornado class, the Bermudian boat took fifth place. In 1988 in Seoul, the first Bermudian tennis player took part. In Seoul, high jumper Nick Saunders reached the final and finished fifth. In 1992 in Barcelona it was the triple jumper Brian Wellman who achieved a top ranking with 5th place in the final. In 1996 in Atlanta he finished sixth.
In 2000 in Sydney the Bermudian boat took fourth place in the star boat class. In 2004 in Athens, a Bermuda triathlete competed for the first time. In London 2012, the long jumper Tyrone Smith qualified for the final, in which he was twelfth. In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, triathlete Flora Duffy finished eighth.
Winter games
Bermudian winter sports enthusiasts have been represented at the Olympic Winter Games since 1992. Since that time, the Bermuda Olympic winter team has always consisted of one athlete. The first winter Olympic athlete was luge rider Simon Payne on February 9, 1992. A skeleton skier took part for the first time in Turin in 2006 and a cross-country skier in Vancouver in 2010.
