The Jamaica Olympic Association was founded in 1936 . Athletes from Jamaica have been taking part in the Olympic Games since 1948. In 1960 the Jamaicans started for the West Indian Federation team .

Medals balance

So far, athletes from Jamaica have won 78 Olympic medals (22 gold, 35 silver and 21 bronze). 66 of the medals were won in track and field, 63 of them in sprint and hurdles disciplines, two in the 800-meter run and one in the long jump .

In 2008, two silver medals were awarded in the women's 100 meter final, as Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart crossed the finish line at the same time.
