Togo , whose NOK , the Comité National Olympique Togolais , was founded in 1963 andrecognizedby the IOC in1965, first took part in the 1972 Summer Olympics. In 1976 Togo joined the call to boycott the Montreal Games and in 1980 the Moscow Games. In 2014, the country took part in the Winter Olympics for the first time.

Track and field athletes, boxers and racing cyclists made up the Togo Olympic team, which traveled to the 1972 Munich Games . The first Olympian was the boxer Guy Segbaya, who competed in featherweight on August 27, 1972. Togo followed calls for a boycott by African countries and the USA and stayed away from the games in Montreal in 1976 and Moscow in 1980 .

Until 2004 in Athens , the Togolese participants could not show any success. In 2000 in Sydney a judoka from Togo took part for the first time. In addition, with the only 14-year-old 800 meter runner Direma Banasso, Togo's first woman competed at the Olympic Games. A canoeist started in Athens for the first time.

In 2008 in Beijing , Togo was represented in Olympic tennis for the first time. In Beijing the slalom canoeist Benjamin Boukpeti won Togo's first and to date only medal. Boukpeti, who competed in a single kayak, won bronze. In 2012 in London a table tennis player and a swimmer took part for the first time, in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro a rower took part.

Two women, a cross-country skier and a ski racer, formed the first Togolese Olympic team at the Winter Games in Sochi in 2014 . The first female winter athlete in Togo was the cross-country skier Mathilde-Amivi Petitjean , who started in the 10 km competition on February 13, 2014.
