Young athletes took part in the Summer Youth Games and in 2012 the Winter Youth Games.
Overview
Summer games
The Cayman Islands first took part in the Olympic Games in 1976. The first Olympic team included two sailors, Gerry Kirkconnell and Peter Milburn, who took part in the 470 regatta on July 19, 1976 on Lake Ontario . The Cayman Islands followed the call for a boycott by the USA and stayed away from the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow.
In 1984 in Los Angeles, cyclists from the Caribbean island took part for the first time, among them Merilyn Phillips, who on July 29, 1984 became the first woman in the Cayman Islands to take part in the Olympic Games. In 1988 athletes started for the first time.
Cydonie Mothersill made it in Sydney in 2000 as the first athlete to qualify for another round in the competition. Until then, all participants had dropped out or could only place at the end of the ranking. In 2004 she was able to advance to the semi-finals in the 200-meter run. In Athens, swimmers from the Cayman Islands took part for the first time.
In 2008 in Beijing there was the first final participation of a participant from the Caribbean island. Cydonie Mothersill qualified for the 200 meter final and finished eighth. The swimmers also got stronger. In 2012 in London the brothers Brett and Shaune Fraser were able to place in the top 20 over 100 and 200 meters freestyle. In athletics, the sprinter Kemar Hyman was qualified for the semi-finals over 100 meters, but did not start there.
Winter games
In 2010 in Vancouver, a winter sports enthusiast from the Cayman Islands took part in the Olympic Games for the first time. The only participant on the Caribbean island was the ski racer Dow Travers , who competed in the giant slalom on February 23, 2010. Travers was the only Cayman Islands participant in Sochi in 2014.
Youth games
The Cayman Islands sent young athletes to all of the Summer Games so far and the 2012 Winter Games.
In 2010 in Singapore, the team consisted of a sailor and two swimmers. In Nanjing 2014, an athlete, a gymnast, a rider and two sailors competed. The rider Polly Serpell won a bronze medal in show jumping as a team member of the mixed team. The medal is assigned to the mixed teams in the medal table.
In 2012 in Innsbruck, ski racer Dean Travers, the younger brother of Dow Travers, took part in the Winter Youth Games. Participation in Lillehammer in 2016 was waived.
