Olympic history of East Timor

East Timor has participated in the Summer Games every timesince the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens . Previously, East Timorese athletes had participated in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney as Independent Olympians when the country was still under the administration of the United Nations . East Timorese athletes were previously part of Indonesia's Olympic teams.
East Timor took part in the Olympic Winter Games for the first time in 2014 . East Timorese youths took part in both of the youth summer games held so far.
National Olympic Committee
In May 2007 the Comité Olímpico Nacional de Timor-Leste CONTL was founded. The chairman was João Viegas Carrascalão until 2010 . He was followed on July 31, 2010 by José Luís Guterres . The current CONTL President has been Francisco Kalbuadi Lay since November 18, 2013.
Summer games
For the first time, East Timor took part in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens with two athletes and four officials. Gil da Cruz Trindade started the marathon , but did not reach the goal. Agueda Amaral finished 65th in the women's marathon. Previously, East Timorese athletes had already participated in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney as Independent Olympians . Calisto da Costa was 71st in the men's marathon, while Agueda Amaral was 43rd in the women's marathon. In boxing (men up to 60 kg), Victor Ramos lost to the Ghanaian Raymond Narh in his first fight .
The marathon runner Mariana Dias Ximenes was the only female athlete to attend the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . Other athletes in boxing, weightlifting and taekwondo could not compete due to lack of money. At the government palace in Dili , a screen was set up for public viewing for the population . Children had the opportunity to try out different sports there. Ximenes did not reach the goal in the marathon.
At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Juventina Napoleão and Augusto Ramos Soares took part in the marathon for East Timor. Both runners reached the finish line, Napoleão 106th, Soares 84th.
Three East Timorese started at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . Nélia Martins came in last place of 41 runners started over the 1500 m for women . Augusto Ramos Soares did not do better in his advance over 1500 m . With 4: 11.35 he was the slowest runner to reach the finish. In the cross-country race on the mountain bike, Francelina Cabral was lapped and finally came second to last. Only the French Pauline Ferrand Pevot was behind her as she did not finish the race.
Winter games
Born in France , Yohan Goutt Goncalves was the first East Timorese to take part in the Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014 . He started in the slalom competition and came in 43rd out of 117 participants. Goncalves also competed in this discipline in 2018 in Pyeongchang , South Korea , but was eliminated in the first run. He came in 104th.
Youth games
At the first Youth Summer Games in Singapore in 2010 , three teenagers, one boy and two girls, competed in athletics and taekwondo. Medals were not won. In the light heavyweight division of the girls' taekwondo tournament, Miloria de Arauju Santos failed in the quarterfinals at the German Antonia Katheder . In 2014 in Nanjing , two teenagers, a boy and a girl, took part in cycling. Again, there were no medals for the country. The two participants in the 2018 Youth Summer Games in athletics were also unsuccessful.
