history

Since the arrival of the Portuguese in 1515, the country has been a Portuguese colony as Portuguese Timor . The nine-day, unilaterally proclaimed independence in 1975 was followed by 24 years of Indonesian occupation and from 1999 to 2002 administration by the United Nations . On May 20, 2002 the independence of East Timor was proclaimed. In 2003, the CONTL was founded as its own Olympic representation. In the same year it was recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney , East Timorese athletes competed as "independent participants" . Since the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, East Timor then sent athletes to all Summer Games as the official participating country . For the first time in Winter Games the country took the 2014 Olympics in Sochi in part. So far, the athletes of the CONTL have not won any Olympic medals (as of 2019).

In 2004 the CONTL was one of the founding members of the ACOLOP. Since then, the country has participated in all Jogos da Lusofonia , the games organized by the ACOLOP for the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries . At the 2006 Games in Macau and the 2014 Games in Goa , East Timor each won a bronze medal.
