Pang Jiaying ( Chinese  龐佳穎  /  庞佳颖 , Pinyin Páng Jiāyíng ; born January 6, 1985 in Shanghai ) is a Chinese freestyle swimmer who celebrated her greatest successes as a relay swimmer over 4 × 200 meters freestyle.

Career

Pang Jiaying has been a world leader in freestyle swimming since the early 2000s. At the 2003 World Swimming Championships in Barcelona , she won the bronze medal with the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay. In 2004 she was able to achieve very good results. At the 2004 Short Course World Championships in Indianapolis she did not win a medal, but was in four finals. With the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay, Jiaying was fourth, over 200 meters freestyle fifth, with the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay sixth and eighth in the 800 meter freestyle.

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens , the Chinese competed on three courses and, apart from the 400 meter freestyle competition, where she was eliminated in the preliminary stages, she reached the finals. She finished seventh in the 200 meter freestyle and won the silver medal in the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay.

With the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay, Jiaying also won a medal at the 2005 World Swimming Championships in Montreal , namely bronze. With the relay on the half as long route, she was sixth.

She won silver again with the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay at the 2006 World Short Course Championships in Shanghai . With the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay, she was sixth, as at the World Cup in Montreal. The 2007 World Swimming Championships in Melbourne did not go quite as well . Pang Jiaying started over four courses, but only reached the final run with the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay and finished in seventh place.

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in her hometown Beijing, Pang Jiaying competed in all three relays and over two individual routes. At first she just missed a medal in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay as fourth. Then she reached the final over 200 meters, where she won the bronze medal behind Federica Pellegrini and Sara Isakovič and set a new Asian record. Over 100 meters she was eliminated in the semifinals, which she actually won, but was subsequently disqualified due to a false start. In her fourth race she went with the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay and won the silver medal behind the Australians with their relay in Asia record time. The last race of these competitions was for them together with the Chinese 4 × 100 meter medley relay. Here, too, Jiaying and her teammates were able to set a new Asian record and won the bronze medal.
