The People's Republic of China took part in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid with a delegation of 24 athletes (13 men, 11 women); this was the first time the country started at the Winter Games . The speed skater Zhao Weichang was chosen as the flag bearer for the opening ceremony.
