from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gyula Toki Horváth [ ˈɟulɒ ˈtoki ˌhoɾvaːt ] (born September 17, 1920 in Kaposvár ; † October 13, 1971 in Munich ) was a Hungarian Roma violinist.

biography

He learned to play the violin at a young age, was Prímás (equivalent to first solo violinist in a Roma chapel) of the municipal Rajkó Orchestra (Hungarian cultural ambassadors, performances abroad) in 1931 and Prímás of the municipal folk orchestra in 1950. After the death of Imre Magyari († 1940) Horváth also named himself with the addition "King of the Gypsies".

With his band he toured in Europe (England, Germany, France) and in the Soviet Union: ".. In 1954 the band gave concerts in the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, Kiev and other Soviet cities .."

In 1956, at the time of the Hungarian people's uprising , which ended with the suppression and "purges", he was in Vienna on a western tour abroad and decided not to return to his home country Hungary despite the risk of reprisals against himself and his family. The band was engaged for the Hungarian specialty eatery "Piroschka" in the west wing of the Munich House of Art . They also had international appearances in Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, Holland, North Africa and as far as the USA. After his death he was buried in the Ostfriedhof.
