Mihály Székely

Mihály Székely (born May 8, 1901 in Jászberény , † March 22, 1963 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian opera singer ( bass ).

Life

Székely Hungarianized his name from Spagatner in Székely. After private studies, she made her first stage appearances as a singer at the Orpheum in Budapest . At the age of 22 he was engaged by the Budapest State Opera . There he took part in over 1,300 performances for 40 years. He also performed abroad in Vienna and Italy.

A priest hid him during the persecution of the Jews. After the Second World War, his friend Antal Doráti wanted to bring him to Dallas. In the USA he received a contract at the New York Metropolitan Opera , where he gave 47 performances in Wagner roles ( Fafner , Landgraf Hermann, König Marke, Hunding ) from 1947 to 1950 .

In the same years he reached a high point of his career in the Budapest Opera House under Otto Klemperer . In 1950 his career abroad was interrupted by a travel ban. In 1956 he was able to travel west again. He has performed in Holland and at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera .

Székely died in 1963 during an operation three days after his last presentation. There is a memorial in the Budapest cemetery where he is buried.
