Cheng Xunzhao

Cheng Xunzhao ( Chinese  程 训 钊 ; born February 9, 1991 in Xuzhou ) is a Chinese judoka who was third in the 2016 Olympic Games in the weight class up to 90 kilograms. Cheng Xunzhao became the first man to win an Olympic medal for China in judo.

Athletic career

The 1.85 m tall Cheng Xunzhao first took part in the international tournament in Qingdao in 2009 and finished in fifth place. The following year he finished third in the World Cup tournament in Almaty. In 2012 he won the East Asian Games and the tournament in Qingdao. In 2013 he was runner-up at the East Asian Games. At the Asian Games in 2014 , he finished seventh, and in 2015 he was fifth at the Asian Championships. At the Asian Championships in Tashkent in 2016, he lost to the Japanese Yūsuke Kobayashi in the semifinals , but won bronze by beating the Indian Avtar Singh in the hope round .

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he won his first two fights against the Greek Ilias Iliadis and the Hungarian Krisztián Tóth in less than a minute each. The quarter-finals against the Swede Marcus Nyman lasted 1:49 minutes. In the semifinals, the Japanese Mashu Baker won after 4:40 minutes. Only in the battle for the bronze medal against the Mongolian Otgonbaatar Lkhagvasuren had Cheng Xunzhao over the full five-minute distance, he won against the Mongol because of penalties.

In 2017, Cheng Xunzhao won the final of the Grand Slam tournament in Paris against the French Axel Clerget . Cheng Xunzhao was the first Chinese to win the traditional tournament in Paris, after numerous Chinese women had already won there.
