Fathi Missaoui

Fathi Missaoui , also Fethi Missaoui and Fathi Al-Missaoui ( Arabic فتحي الميساوي, DMG Fatḥī al-Mīsāwī ; * January 8, 1974 ) is a former boxer from Tunisia . He won an Olympic bronze medal in the light welterweight division in 1996, making it only the third Olympic medalist in Tunisian sports history.

Boxing career

In 1994 he won the silver medal in the light welterweight division at the 41st Military World Championships in Tunisia. He was only defeated in the final against the German Oktay Urkal . In May 1996 he won the African Olympic qualification with a final victory against the Olympic champion Hocine Soltani . He then took part in the 26th Olympic Games in Atlanta in August 1996 , where he won a bronze medal in the light welterweight division. He defeated Lee Trautsch from Australia (25: 9), Francis Barrett from Ireland (18: 6) and Mohamed Allalou from Algeria (16:15), before losing to Oktay Urkal (6:20) again in the semifinals Reached 3rd place.

In February 1997 he won the Strandja tournament in Bulgaria, u. a. with a win against world and Olympic champion Oleg Saitow . In September 1997 he was also able to win the 3rd Francophonie games in Madagascar with a final victory against Malik Cherchari .

He turned pro in Canada in 1998 and won each of his twelve fights, seven of which by knockout. On November 3, 2000, he won the WBO North American Light Middleweight Championship . He defeated the southpaw Andrew Murray, former World Cup challenger of the WBA , unanimously on points. After another points win in October 2001 against Johnny Rivera from Puerto Rico, he had to retire from active boxing due to an eye injury.
