Abdelmalik Cherchari (born August 20, 1974 - January 26, 2013 in Le Pont-de-Claix ) was a French boxer .

Amateur career

Malik Cherchari boxed as an amateur in the light welterweight and welterweight division. He became French champion in 1996 and won the silver medal at the multinational tournament in England after only being eliminated in the final against Serhiy Dsindsiruk . In 1997 he again won the silver medal at the Francophonie Games in Madagascar , when he was again only defeated in the final against Fathi Missaoui .

At the 1997 World Championships in Hungary he narrowly missed the medal ranks when he lost 5: 5+ to Tonton Semakala in the decisive quarter-final match. At the Golden Belt tournament in Romania in 1999 he won against Mihály Kótai , among others , but was eliminated in the semifinals against Dorel Simion , with which he won bronze. He won another bronze medal after a semi-final defeat by Muhammadqodir Abdullayev at the 1999 French Open tournament in France. Also in 1999 he won the Gee Bee tournament in Finland .

Professional career and death

In 2000 he switched to the professional camp and won twelve development fights in France before boxing for the intercontinental championship of the WBA in the light middleweight division on December 13, 2002 in Piacenza, Italy , defeating the undefeated Simone Rotolo by knockout in the ninth round. Four months later he won on points against eventual European champion Rafał Jackiewicz .

He suffered his only defeat in May 2003 against Fatah "Brice" Faradji. After two consecutive victories, he ended his career in March 2005.

In 2013 he died of complications from a heart attack at the age of only 38.
