Mozambique took part in the 2000 Summer Olympics in the Australian metropolis of Sydney with five athletes, three women and two men, in two sports.
Since 1980 it was the sixth participation of the African state in the Summer Olympic Games .
Flag bearer
Track and field athlete Jorge Duvane carried the Mozambique flag during the opening ceremony at Stadium Australia .
Medalist
His teammate Maria de Lurdes Mutola won the first gold medal in Mozambique's Olympic history in the women's 800-meter run .
With this one gold medal won, the Mozambique team finished 50th in the medal table .
