qualification

Qualification criteria

128 athletes will take part in the competitions, 64 women and 64 men, including four athletes from the host NOC and another four athletes invited by the Taekwondo Federation (WTF) after the qualification phase. Each NOK could qualify a total of up to four athletes, two women and two men, but a maximum of one athlete per weight class. Achieving quota places was decisive for the allocation of starting places.

The qualification phase began in July 2011 with the global WTF Olympic qualification tournament in Baku . Each NOK was allowed to use a maximum of four athletes in different weight classes. In each weight class, the athletes won a quota place in the first three places. Continental qualifying tournaments then took place between September 2011 and February 2012. NOKs were only allowed to use an athlete in the weight classes in which a quota place had not yet been achieved or no more athletes if two women and / or men had already won a quota place. In each weight class, three athletes from Europe , Asia and America , two from Africa and one from Oceania qualified at these tournaments .

At the end of May 2011, the British federation determined the four weight classes in which it will put athletes at the Games. The classes up to 57 kg and up to 67 kg were chosen for women and the classes up to 68 kg and up to 80 kg for men. The four quota places that the WTF was able to allocate by invitation were consequently awarded in April 2012 for women in the classes up to 49 kg (to Panama) and over 67 kg (to Cambodia) and for men in the classes up to 58 kg (to Yemen) and over 80 kg (to Mali).
