Servet Tazegül (born September 26, 1988 in Nuremberg ) is a Turkish Taekwondoin of Azerbaijani origin from Kars . It starts in the weight class up to 68 kilograms. He is Olympic champion, two-time world champion and multiple European champion for the Turkish association. In his youth he achieved international success for the German association.

Career

Tazegül began his sporting career in his hometown with the KSC Leopard Nuremberg club . In his first international title fight, the 2004 Junior World Championship in Suncheon , he won the title in his weight class. A year later he was able to win the European Junior Championship in Baku . Tazegül finally made his breakthrough to the top international in the adult sector in 2008. In Rome he won the European championship title, in Istanbul he won the European Olympic qualification tournament and competed at the Olympic Games in Beijing . There he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the later Olympic champion Son Tae-jin , but reached the fight for third place via the hope round. After defeating Peter López , he ultimately won the bronze medal. At the 2009 World Cup , Tazegül reached the semi-finals and also won his first World Cup medal with bronze.

In the following years Tazegül dominated the title fights in his weight class. With final victories over Filip Grgić , he won the gold medal at the European Championships in Saint Petersburg in 2010 and in Manchester in 2012 . He also won the finals at the 2011 World Cup in Gyeongju and became world champion for the first time. Tazegül won the 2011 international Olympic qualification tournament in Baku and secured a starting place for his second Olympic Games in London in 2012 . Tazegül moved into the final in London, where he prevailed against the Iranian Mohammad Bagheri Motamed with six to five points. This made Tazegül the first Turkish Taekwondo Olympic champion. He won the gold medal at the 2015 Taekwondo World Championships in Chelyabinsk , Russia . He finished seventh at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .
