European Taekwondo Championships

The Taekwondo European Championships are the continental championships in Taekwondo organized by the European Taekwondo Union (ETU) . The title fights took place for the first time in 1976, just one month after the ETU was founded. Since then, they have been held every two years.

Events

Germany is the most frequent host of the title fights with three events, followed by Denmark, Spain, Russia and Turkey with two each. Twelve other countries have so far held the title fights once. They take place every two years, only in 2005 a championship took place once in an uneven year.

Competitions

At the first two European championships, eight weight classes were held for men each. Athletes from the twelve countries that were involved in founding the ETU took part. In 1980 there were ten weight classes for men, and for the first time women also took part in seven different weight classes. The format with eight weight classes for women and men, which is still valid today, has been held since 1986. The division of the individual classes was often changed and was always based on the specifications of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).
