The World Taekwondo (until July 2017 World Taekwondo Federation / WTF ) was founded on May 28, 1973 and is based in Seoul .

The WTF has 204 (as of March 2013) national associations with over 30 million members. The WTF was able to achieve that Taekwondo was recognized as an Olympic sport on September 4, 1994 . The 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney were the first in which she was allowed to take part and officially entered the medal ranking, after Taekwondo was already represented as a demonstration competition at the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 and in Barcelona in 1992 .

The WTF has been a member of Sportaccord since 1975 ( GAISF until 2009 ) and was recognized by the IOC in 1980 . It competes with the International Taekwondo Federation founded in 1966 . It is not to be confused with the World Taekwondo Headquarters (Kukkiwon).

The Korean Choue Chung-won has been the WTF President since 2004 ; his predecessor was Kim Un-yong from 1973 to 2004 . General Secretary of the WT is Yang Jin-suk.
