Glenhis Hernández Horta (born October 7, 1990 in Havana ) is a Cuban Taekwondoin who is active in the weight class up to 73 kilograms.

Athletic career

Hernández played their first international title fights at the Pan American Games 2011 in Guadalajara . In the weight class over 67 kilograms, she reached the final and celebrated her first title win after beating the Puerto Rican Nikki Martínez . At the Pan-American Olympic qualification competition in Santiago de Querétaro , Hernández won the decisive battle for third place in the heavyweight over 67 kilograms against the Dominican Deysy Montes de Oca and thus secured participation in the 2012 Olympic Games in London . There she was defeated in the battle for the bronze medal of the Mexican María Espinoza with 2: 4 points.

At the 2013 World Championships in Puebla , Mexico , Hernández achieved her greatest success to date by winning the gold medal. In the final of the weight class up to 73 kilograms, she beat South Korean Lee In-jong 5-1.

To the Central American and Caribbean Games 2014 in Veracruz (Mexico), she traveled as a favorite and captain of the Cuban taekwondo national team. In the final of the class up to 73 kilograms she was defeated by María Espinoza with 1: 3 and thus won the silver medal.

Ban for unsportsmanlike conduct

At the award ceremony after the final fight on November 17, 2014, Hernández caused a scandal by first holding out the middle finger of her left hand as a protest sign, then the middle finger of her right, during the cheering pose for the photographers on the podium next to the other medalists in front of the assembled audience Hand. Observers assumed that they wanted to express their dissatisfaction with the points awarded by the judges in the final fight. In the subsequent disciplinary proceedings, she claimed in her defense that she had injured her right middle finger and was therefore unable to bend it. The Cuban team doctors supported this representation, but apparently did not pay attention to the fact that it was clearly visible in the photos and video recordings that Hernández had moved both middle fingers one after the other at the award ceremony without showing any disability. The Arbitration Commission, made up of four leading members of the Pan American Taekwondo Union (PATU) and the delegate of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), imposed a disciplinary penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct and excluded Hernández from all competitions recognized by the WTF for the 2015 calendar year. She will therefore miss out on participation in the World Championships in Chelyabinsk , the Pan American Games in Toronto and the first qualifying competitions for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

In an interview at the venue, Hernández denied their action and presented himself with a bandage around his right middle finger. She argued that she was wrongly attacked by the allegations, that it was a misinterpretation and that false information had been spread. She is a very responsible sportswoman who accepts defeats “with real dignity”. In another interview, the President of the Cuban Taekwondo Association denied that any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct had occurred and expressed his lack of understanding of the disciplinary procedure. In the official press of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba , the daily Granma , its sports editor posted to Veracruz claimed that the disciplinary punishment was based solely on a photo of the award ceremony, which had led to a misinterpretation. This representation went unchallenged in the state media. An article of a Taekwondo specialist publication, which was initially quoted in full on the website of the Trabajadores newspaper and which described the complete facts, was withdrawn shortly after its publication. Before the arrival of the Cuban delegation to the games in Veracruz, Hernández read a speech to the Cuban government on behalf of all 543 athletes present at the official farewell ceremony in Havana, which concluded with the promise that the athletes would "return home with the most important medal: the Medal of Dignity ”. In January 2015, Cuban media reported efforts by the national federation to halve the suspension, which could preserve the prospect of Hernández 'participation in the World Championships in Toronto and the Olympic Games in Rio.

Honors

In 2011, Hernández was named the best female athlete in Havana in an individual sport.

Hernández is a role model celebrated by the media not only because of her sporting successes, but is also a member of the National Assembly of People's Power , to which she was elected in 2012 in the constituency of Habana del Este on the proposal of the state and party leadership unopposed.
