Helena Fromm (born August 5, 1987 in Oeventrop ) is a German Taekwondoin . She is six-time German champion in the class up to 67 kilograms. In 2012 she won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games, and in 2008 she became European champion.

As a sports soldier, Fromm belongs to the Sonthofen Sports Promotion Group . She competes for the PSV Eichstätt club.

Career

Fromm grew up in Oeventrop in the Sauerland . As a girl, she first played handball and soccer. When a sports school opened in her hometown in 1996, her parents registered her there. She was trained there by trainer Roland Schältke until 2006 and registered for the first Taekwondo competition in 1997.

She celebrated her first international successes in 2003 with the European Junior Championship in Athens and in 2004 with second place at the Junior World Championships in Suncheon . After switching to the senior division, he won the German Open in 2005 and came second at the Korean Open. In 2006 she switched to coach Carlos Esteves. In 2006 she finished second at the European Championships held in Bonn and won her first German championship title later in the season.

In 2007 she graduated from Mariengymnasium Arnsberg . In the same year she won the bronze medal in the class up to 67 kilograms at the world championships in Beijing, the only medal for the German Taekwondo Union (DTU). On September 29, 2007 she suffered a serious knee injury at the qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games in the fight against European Champion Gwladys Épangue . After the necessary operation, she celebrated a successful comeback in April 2008 by winning the title at the European Championships in Rome . A month and a half later, she confirmed her performance by winning the World Military Championships.

On July 15, 2008, the German Olympic Sports Confederation announced its participation in the Olympic Games. Her nomination was overshadowed by her teammate Pınar Budak's attempt to enforce her participation through a lawyer. In January 2008 Budak had only secured the starting place for the DTU at the qualifying tournament in Istanbul.

On August 22, 2008 Helena Fromm fought at the Olympic Games and reached 9th place. In the first fight she defeated Barry Dalanda from Guinea 6-1. The quarter-finals were lost 2-0 to Puerto Rican Asunción Ocasio . Since Ocasio did not make it into the final, Helena Fromm could no longer take part in a battle for bronze via the consolation round.

In 2011 she qualified for participation in her third world championships. As in 2007, she was able to win the bronze medal at the World Championships in Gyeongju , one of two medals for the DTU team. Sümeyye Manz and Helena Fromm are the only German Taekwondo athletes who have won medals at two senior world championships.

At the 2012 Olympics , she won the bronze medal with an 8-2 victory over Carmen Marton . When she returned to her home town of Oeventrop, she was cheered by around 2000 people and signed the city of Arnsberg's golden book .

In May 2013, Helena Fromm announced a sports break because of her pregnancy. On November 20, 2013, Fromm became the mother of a son. In March 2014, WOLL-Verlag published her book Ready to fight: Feet, Hands, Mind - Live and Feel Taekwondo .

She was unable to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro due to a meniscus injury.
