history

View of the main building

The school was founded in 1889 by the poor school sisters of Notre Dame as a Catholic secondary school for girls. This opened the city's first secondary school for girls in addition to the Laurentianum grammar school. For this purpose, the sisters acquired a building in the classicist quarter of the city of Arnsberg, which was built between 1818 and 1822. In 1898, the sisters had two more wings and a neo-Gothic chapel built in the back towards the Ruhr. This contains a remarkable Madonna and Child on a crescent moon. Further buildings were built around 1903. The complex of the monument also includes a garden pavilion built in the classical period.

In the first few years the school had about 25 teachers, all of whom were members of the order. In addition to normal schooling, the sisters played an important role in teacher training. Up to the opening of the state teacher training college in 1906, around 200 teachers had been trained at the school. The school was initially designed for around 250 to 300 students, some of whom lived in a boarding school belonging to the school. In 1914 the school was recognized as a lyceum . Two years later, a higher commercial school was set up as an additional facility, which, however, could not hold its own in the 1920s due to a lack of demand.

During the time of National Socialism , the Lyceum was withdrawn from the school sisters in 1937 and converted into a modern-language municipal high school for girls. Classes took place in the building of the former secondary school. At the same time, the Protestant girls' college was dissolved and both schools were merged. After the end of the Second World War , both the English occupation authorities and the Arnsberg district government wanted to hold onto the interdenominational school, but in 1946 the religious school was restored. However, since then Protestant students have also been accepted and Protestant teachers have been hired.

The school has been accepting boys since 1985. In 2009 the last nun from the teaching staff retired. In the past few years, the school has been modernized and expanded through construction work, including a modern sports hall. In view of the steadily growing demand, the cafeteria, which was only a few years old, was expanded in 2010.

In 2014, the 125th anniversary of the school's founding was celebrated with various activities spread over the year, such as a trip to the Cologne Cathedral for the entire school . The highlight was a ceremony at the school with a reception by Archbishop Hans-Josef Becker and other representatives from church, politics and society.

The abbreviation “MGA” has become established for the Mariengymnasium Arnsberg among the students and beyond.

chapel

building

The current main building has been expanded over time to include new wings. It is now a contiguous building.

The old main building on Königstrasse was sold to an investor who had the building renovated and converted into apartments for the elderly. In the course of this renovation work, the demolition of the school chapel (Marienkapelle) was also planned. The responsible Archdiocese of Paderborn had also agreed to this. However, in the spring of 2007 this met with fierce public resistance, headed by the provost of the parish of St. Laurentius . A support association was formed to preserve the chapel.

The former sister house of the poor school sisters is now used by the Shalom Catholic Community , which founded its first branch in Germany in Arnsberg in 2016.

On the property of the Mariengymnasium there is one of the two historic garden houses in Arnsberg from the early 19th century in a classicist style, which were Monument of the Month of the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association in July 2008 . A few years ago the garden house was taken over by the city of Arnsberg.

particularities

seal

The Mariengymnasium was awarded the seal of approval for individual support from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Since 2017 the school has been a school without racism - school with courage . In the same year the Mariengymnasium was recognized as a " MINT- friendly school". The Mariengymnasium was also honored as a "digital school".

School partnerships

The school maintains a school partnership with the St Andrea Kaggwa School in Uganda and the Lyceum in the Polish twin town of Olesno .

Current school life

The range of languages offered by the Mariengymnasium does not differ from the neighboring Laurentianum. English is taught continuously from grade five. In grade six, Latin or French are added as a second foreign language chosen. In French, the aim is to voluntarily acquire the DELF language certificate , and in Latin to acquire the Latinum at the end of the introductory phase. Later in the school career, there is also the option of adding Spanish as a third foreign language to one's schedule.

In the MINT subjects there are various offers in addition to the lessons such as working groups, including the natural science working group that has existed for many years, and participation in various competitions.

Several school trips are organized. As a rule, the sixth grade goes to Norderney for five days and the eighth grade goes to a major German city such as Hamburg . In addition, the language departments can plan additional trips to the relevant countries. In the seventh grade, it is possible to voluntarily take part in a trip to the south of England with accommodation with host families. In addition, a cathedral pilgrimage to Paderborn, organized by the sponsor, took place regularly in the past for grades 6 and various subject-related excursions and sports days are regularly undertaken.

There is a close cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) on the same street , especially in business English, which can be selected from grade 8.

There is a partnership with the neighboring Laurentianum grammar school for teaching various subjects in the upper secondary school, so that courses that only a few students have chosen can be implemented in cooperation.
