Ghirmay Ghebreslassie (born November 14, 1995 ) is an Eritrean long-distance runner . He became world champion in the marathon in 2015 .

Career

Ghebreslassie gained his first international experience at the World Cross Country Championships 2013 in Bydgoszcz, where he finished seventh in the junior race. Only one week later he won the half marathon race at the Paderborn Easter run in 1:00:07 h. At the 2014 Half Marathon World Championships in Copenhagen, he finished seventh in 1:00:10 h. In the same year he won the Göteborgsvarvet and the Giro di Castelbuono . He also started the Chicago Marathon as a pacemaker and finished the race in sixth place in 2:09:08 hours.

In April 2015, Ghebreslassie achieved a new personal best in second place in the Hamburg Marathon with 2:07:47 h.

He celebrated the greatest international success of his career up to then four months later with the surprising title win at the World Championships in Beijing . This made him the youngest marathon world champion in history and the first gold medalist from Eritrea at world athletics championships.

At the end of April 2016, Ghebreslassie increased his best performance at the London Marathon by one second to 2:07:46 h and finished fourth in the high-class race. Three weeks later he won the Bern Grand Prix over 10 miles (16.093 km) in 47:01 minutes.

Olympic Games 2016

In the marathon of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro he finished fourth in 2:11:04 h. In November he won the New York City Marathon in 2:07:51 h. This made him the youngest winner of this race to date.

At the London Marathon 2017 , Ghebreslassie finished sixth in 2:09:57 h.
