life and career

Steyn was born in the Zimbabwean capital Harare in 1993 and spent the first two years of his life there. At the age of two he moved with his family to Zug , Switzerland , where he was able to gain his first experience in skiing and was trained there from the age of nine. He completed his first official FIS race in 2008; his first two listed races are two junior slalom races in the Norwegian winter sports resort of Geilo on November 22, 2008. Only three days later he completed his first FIS adult race; in the Hemsedal Super-G , he only finished 149th. After initial difficulties, he often dropped out or was not able to qualify at all for the final run, places soon followed in the top 30 to 40. He achieved his sometimes best placement with a fifth place in a national youth race in Champoluc, Italy on 4. January 2011. In the course of this year, especially in April, he achieved several top 30 placements. Steyn achieved the next major successes in December 2013 in various races in the US ski resort of Mammoth Mountain in California . He achieved five places in the top 12 in six different races that he completed over a period of nine days.

In addition to his career as a ski racer, the Zimbabwean native began studying business administration at the UC of Boulder , a state university in Boulder , Colorado . There he joined the USCSA ski team and from then on represented the team in numerous races. While still a student, he was selected as the first Zimbabwean participant in the Winter Olympics in summer 2013 after successfully qualifying for the major tournament. In order to still achieve the qualification points that were still missing at the time, he was released from his university for a year to support him in his qualification for the Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee awarded the young Zimbabwean an Olympic scholarship in 2013, which was valid from July 2013 to February 2014, and was intended to support the athletes not only financially but also technically in order to achieve the required qualification points and participate in the Olympic Winter Games.

His appearances at the Olympic Games were the giant slalom (57th place) on February 19th and the slalom competition on February 22nd . When he marched in during the opening ceremony, Steyn was the only participant in his country to be the flag bearer of Zimbabwe.
