The SchlaU school is a state-recognized supplementary school in Munich - Ludwigsvorstadt . The abbreviation "smart" represents Sch u la naloger U nterricht.

The SchlaU and ISuS schools are administered by the registered association responsible for young refugees . This has set itself the goal of supporting unaccompanied refugees aged between 16 and 21 years (in exceptional cases up to 25) is their human right to education and school perceive and society participate .

history

The SchlaU school emerged from the SchlaU project founded in 2000 by the sponsoring group for the promotion of education and integration of refugee children and young people. V. emerged. The association has since been part of the Young Refugees Association. V. renamed. In 2004 the teaching offer was recognized by the Bavarian Ministry of Education as a supplementary school.

The school was initially housed in 2000 at Adlzreiterstraße 23 ( Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt ); In 2002 the company moved to Fraunhoferstraße 2 ( Isarvorstadt ), in 2008 to Schillerstraße (Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt) and in 2012 to Schwanthalerstraße 2 (Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt). In 2012 the subsidiary school ISuS (abbreviated for integration through immediate schooling and stabilization ) was founded. The ISuS school offers the literacy and basic level of the school-like chain of effects of the association.

In the summer of 2013 Michael Stenger was retired after 13 years as headmaster; he was succeeded by Antonia Veramendi.

The 15th anniversary was celebrated with the multimedia project 15 Years of SchlaU - Living Between Traditions , a cooperation between students from the SchlaU school and the English photographer Patrick Frost, shown in the Munich city library in Gasteig . Young people who fled to Munich receive face and voice in a short introductory film. Photos from the perspective of the students show the different traditions they have already faced in their lives.

Structure of the organization

The sponsoring group for young refugees acts as sponsor of the SchlaU school and the SchlaUzubi aftercare program. The ISuS school is a spin-off subsidiary that has been literate and imparting basic knowledge since 2012 and thus acts as the preliminary stage to SchlaU. The association also offers information, awareness-raising and training for important multipliers and institutions with regard to all topics that affect minors and young refugees.

Furthermore, in 2016 the association founded the SchlaU workshop for migration education, which, in addition to research and internal school advice, conceptualizes and carries out multiplier and further training offers and develops teaching materials for young refugees.

Teaching concept

Around 200 young refugees are taught in small school classes at the school. The work of the school includes personality strengthening, literacy and teaching in the German language, and it leads its students to the secondary school leaving certificate , which they take at Munich schools; some of the students then continue their education with a high school diploma and university studies. The school also arranges company internships for its students and offers after-school care for former students for the duration of their training.

The age range from 16 years upwards is of particular importance, as until recently refugees from this age onwards were no longer entitled to attend a normal school according to the German or Bavarian school laws , but on the other hand were mostly not yet allowed to be gainfully employed. For example, until a few years ago, refugees who were 15½ years or older when they entered the country had no access to the school system. As a private school, the SchlaU school offered and still offers these people an educational and development perspective.

Cooperation and funding

In addition to the teachers, the school staff includes several social pedagogues . The school integrates around 300 volunteers who support the students individually or in small groups.

Largely supported by the state capital Munich and Bavaria, the SchlaU school is partly financed by private sponsorships or funds from foundations, associations and private individuals.

Awards

In 2003 the SchlaU project was awarded the “Münchner Lichtblicke” award. Headmaster Michael Stenger was named an Ashoka Fellow in 2009 because of his commitment . In 2011 he received the Integration Medal of the German Federal Government and in 2012 the Kerschensteiner Medal of the City of Munich. ISuS, SchlaU's subsidiary school, received the Munich Lichtblicke sponsorship award in 2012 .
