Cristina Iovu (born November 8, 1992 in Chișinău , Republic of Moldova ) is a Moldovan or Azerbaijani weightlifter .

Career

Iovu was discovered at the age of 13 by her future coach Sergiu Cretu at a talent search event at her school in Cisnau. Since then she has been training intensively weightlifting, often doing several training sessions lasting several hours in one day. Success came quickly, because after three years of preparation she started in April 2008 at the age of sixteen at the European Women's Championships in Lignano in the weight category up to 48 kg. She achieved 166 kg (70-96) in a duel and achieved an excellent 5th place with this performance. In September 2008 she won the Junior European Championship (U 20) in Durres / Albania in the same weight class with a duel of 159 kg (70-89) behind Marzena Karpińska , Poland, 177 kg (82-95) and Genny Pagliardo , Italy, 165 kg (76-89) took 3rd place and won her first medal at an international championship.

In April 2009 Cristian Iovu at the European Championships for Women in Bucharest in the weight class up to 48 kg, Vice European Champion behind the superior winner Nurcan Taylan , Turkey, who achieved 196 kg (88-108). She increased herself in a duel to 171 kg (75-96) and also won individual medals with her performances in snatching and pushing.

After this championship she was injured for a long time and was only able to start again in an international championship in April 2011. She came here at the European Women's Championships in Kazan in the weight class up to 48 kg on 161 kg (71-90) and landed with it in 7th place. In September 2011 Cristina Iovu became Junior European Champion (U 20) in Bucharest in the weight class up to 53 kg. She achieved 195 kg (90-105) in a duel. That was the first championship title that she won at an international championship. In November 2011 she started again in the weight class up to 48 kg at the World Championships in Paris . But she was very unlucky there, because she injured herself in the tear on her first attempt, had to give up and thus remained unplaced without a duel.

2012 turned out to be the most successful year in Cristina Iovu's career. In April of this year she became European champion in Antalya in the weight class up to 53 kg with a duel of 207 kg (91-116). She also won the EM gold medal with her performances in tearing and pushing. In July 2012 she won the Olympic Games in London in the weight class up to 53 kg with a duel of 219 kg (99-120) behind Sülfija Tschinschanlo , Kazakhstan, 226 kg (95-131) and the same performance but slightly lighter Taiwanese Hsu Shu-chin , 219 kg (96–123) won the bronze medal, but on 11/21/16 the IOC withdrew it. In December 2012 she was in Eilat Junior World Champion (U 20) in the weight class up to 53 kg with a duel of 207 kg (92-115). This was Iovu's last start for her home country Moldova, as she changed her citizenship on January 1, 2013 and has since started for Azerbaijan. The reason is likely to be the much better financial support from the Azerbaijani weightlifting association than the Moldovan weightlifting association is able to do.

From a sporting point of view, however, this change brought her no luck. After her first start for Azerbaijan in July 2013 at the Universiade in Kazan, where she had taken 2nd place in the weight class up to 58 kg with 226 kg (100-126), she was convicted of doping with oxandrolone . Inexplicably, she was also at the World Championships in Wrocław in October 2013, where she took second place in the weight class up to 53 kg in the 221 kg (100–121) duel. Due to the results of the doping test in July 2013, she was banned by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) from June 19, 2013 to June 19, 2015. Their results from the Universiade in Kazan and the World Cup in Wrocław were canceled. A test of the doping sample Iovus from the 2012 Olympics was also positive for Turinabol . She was therefore subsequently disqualified in 2016 .
