Oxandrolone (trade names Oxandrin and Anavar ) is a 17-methyl steroid and an anabolic steroid that was first synthesized in 1962.

It is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an orphan drug for the treatment of alcoholic hepatitis , Turner syndrome, and weight loss due to HIV .

Like all banned anabolic steroids, it must not be used by athletes at any time (not even for medical reasons) (→ doping list ).
