Oskar Ospelt

Oskar Ospelt (born July 27, 1908 in Hittisau ; † June 15, 1988 ) was a Liechtenstein athlete who took part in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.

Career

Ospelt was born in Vorarlberg in 1908. After completing a degree in electrical and mechanical engineering in Konstanz, he started his professional activity at Lawenawerke, today's Liechtenstein power plants, and became a citizen of Vaduz . When Liechtenstein athletes first took part in the Olympic Games at the Summer Olympics in Berlin in 1936 , Ospelt was one of the six selected athletes . He started in the 100-meter run and in the discus throw , but was eliminated in each qualification.

In 1937 and 1938 Ospelt won the Swiss championships in discus throwing. At the European Athletics Championships in Paris in 1938 , he finished 15th in the discus throw with 39.80 m and eighth in the javelin throw with 58.83 m. On July 23, 1938, Ospelt threw the discus in Basel at 43.36 m. This Liechtenstein national record is one of the oldest existing national records in the world. Alongside Xaver Frick , Ospelt was one of the founders of the Athletics Club Vaduz in the 1940s .

After the Second World War , Ospelt took part again in the 1946 European Athletics Championships in 1946 . In the discus throw he was eliminated there in sixteenth with 38.35 m in qualification. In the javelin throw, he took thirteenth place with 52.73 m.

In addition to his athletic career, his professional career was also successful. Ospelt had been operations manager at the Liechtenstein power plants from 1947, and from 1962 until retirement in 1974 he was their technical director.
