The slate thrush ( Geokichla sibirica , Syn .: Zoothera sibirica ) is a species of bird from the thrush family (Turdidae).

Occurrence

The shale thrush breeds in the Siberian taiga from the Yenisei east to Magadan and south to Lake Baikal and in northeastern China . It is also found on the islands of Sakhalin , Hokkaidō and Honshū . The species is a migratory bird that overwinters in Southeast Asia . Individual specimens sometimes reach Western Europe as a random visitor in autumn or winter . Usually two subspecies are distinguished: G. s. davisoni ( Hume , 1877) on the three mentioned islands and the nominate form G. s. sibirica on the mainland.

features

With a body length of about 20 cm and a weight of 60 to 72 g, the species is about the same size as a song thrush . The legs are yellow and the beak dark. The adult males are dark gray-blue and appear black from a distance. The belly of the males has more or less white patterns depending on the specimen, but they all have a broad white median strip in common. There is also a wide, white eye-line and a white outer edge on the tail. Females are olive-brown on the upper side, while the yellow-white underside has strong dark horizontal lines. In females, the eye line is beige and there is also a line of the same color on the chin. From below the wings of both sexes appear black with double white bands, so they resemble the northern subspecies of the earth thrush ( Zoothera dauma aurea ). The subspecies G. s. davisoni is darker than the nominate form and has a less white tail edge.

Way of life and exposure

The slate thrush is very shy. It breeds in mountain forests at low altitudes. The forest can consist of deciduous or evergreen deciduous trees, or of conifers. The species breeds further north in the taiga plains. Different insects as well as worms and berries serve as food .

The IUCN lists the shale thrush as not endangered ( least concern ).
