Said Saif Asaad ( Arabic أسعد سعيد سيف, DMG Asʿad Saʿīd Saif ; * May 31, 1979 in Bulgaria as Angel Popow ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter who started for Qatar in 1999.

Athletic career

Popov started internationally for the first time in 1998 at the Junior World Championship in Sofia . In the middle-heavy weight category up to 94 kg, he took third place with 360.0 kg (160.0 / 200.0 kg). At the Junior European Championships in the same year he was able to increase to 365.0 kg (165.0 / 200.0 kg), which was enough for fourth place here. Popow's last competition for his native Bulgaria was the 1999 Junior World Championships in Savannah . He had meanwhile moved up to the heavyweight division up to 105 kg and won gold with 397.5 kg (175.0 / 222.5 kg) ahead of Yevgeny Tschigischew and Vladimir Smorchkow with 397.5 kg and 392.5 kg.

In 1999, the Qatari Weightlifting Association bought eight Bulgarian weightlifters for one million dollars, including Angel Popov, who would now run for the Gulf State under the name Said Saif Asaad. Asaad made his first appearance under the new flag in the same year at the World Championships in Athens . With a duel of 400.0 kg (180.0 / 220.0 kg) he finished 11th. The winner was Denis Gotfrid with 430.0 kg.

The Asian Championships in 2000 represented another important competition in preparation for the Olympic Games. With 407.5 kg (180.0 / 227.5 kg) Asaad was able to prevail in the relatively weak field and won gold. At the games in Sydney he increased to 420.0 kg (190.0 / 230.0 kg) and won bronze behind Hossein Tavakoli with 425.0 kg and Alan Zagaew with 422.5 kg.

After a one-year break from competition, Asaad competed at the Asian Games in Busan in 2002 and won gold with 417.5 kg (192.5 / 225.0 kg) ahead of Cui Wenhua with 415.0 kg and the Olympic champion Tavakoli with 400.0 kg. He also won the 2003 World Cup in Vancouver with 422.5 kg (195.0 / 227.5 kg).

With the achievements of previous years, Asaad could be counted among the medal favorites for his second Olympic Games in Athens in 2004. After 192.5 kg in the snatch, he renounced the third attempt, possibly due to injury or psychological reasons, but was then unable to bring in a valid attempt three times in the push. The winner Dmitri Berestov achieved 425.0 kg.

In 2005 Asaad won the Asian Championships again with 390.0 kg (180.0 / 210.0 kg). In his subsequent competitions, the 2005 World Championships and the 2006 Asian Games in Doha , however, he was unable to bring in a duel and thus remained unplaced.

At the 2007 World Championships he refused a doping control and was then banned for two years.
