List of dams in the Ruhr

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of barrages in the Ruhr shows the weirs and reservoirs on the Ruhr, including the locks for Ruhr shipping and the fishways . The weirs are used, among other things, to regulate water and supply drinking water, and in parts also for shipping, and they also protect bridge structures from being undermined. At the same time, however, they represent a barrier for aquatic life.

Biological patency

Dams represent barriers which, without special measures, impair the ecological permeability for fish and invertebrates . In the lower Ruhr alone, between Duisburg and Westhofen , there are 16 weir systems. Due to the impassability of the weirs at the Kettwiger See and Baldeneysee, salmon only penetrate the Ruhr as far as Mülheim as of 2013 to spawn there. The tributaries of the Ruhr are also dammed by weirs, the Lenne has 60 weirs. According to Section 34, Paragraph 3 of the Water Management Act , the operators of the dams they operate or build must take the necessary measures to create patency.

Tons of salmon were still being caught in the Ruhr at the end of the 19th century. The salmon has not existed for over 100 years. Since 2007, spawning grounds for salmon near Mülheim an der Ruhr have been detected again, although the Duisburg Ruhr weir remains an obstacle. As of 2010 it was said: "Salmon can only make it if they use the rare opportunities of an open lock on the Rhine-Ruhr connection in Duisburg."
