The Stiftsmühle weir is an almost 200 m long weir in the Ruhr at the confluence of the Ruhr and Volme in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany). The northern section of the weir is located in the town of Herdecke , the southern section has been in the Hagen district of Vorhalle since it was rededicated in 1964 .

history

The weir was built in 1930 by the Ruhr Association together with the Stiftsmühle power plant to the northwest . Weir and power station are also used to manage the Hengsteysee and Harkortsee lakes , and by regulating the water level, the Koepchenwerk located around two and a half kilometers upstream on the Hengsteysee , which, as a pumped storage power station , ensures that the water levels in this section of the Ruhr fluctuate sharply.

In the past there was the “Stiftsmühlenwehr”, which was named after the former grain mill “Stiftsmühle” of the liberal Herdecker Damenstift , which was repealed in 1811, at the location of today's weir . The Stiftsmühle was a few hundred meters further down the river on the Mühlengraben , which was filled in in the early 1950s. The weir replaced the old mill battle with a slightly different function .

In 1938 the course of the Ruhr above the Stiftsmühlen weir was swiveled around 350 m towards the northeast or Herdecke over a length of more than one kilometer as part of the construction of the A 1 motorway , so that the Ruhr has a clear bend there today. The mouth of the Volme was previously a little further to the east.

In 2017 a new lock was installed in the weir.

Fish way

Weir and power plant are connected by a small artificial island - partly a barrier structure, partly semi-natural and tree-lined gravel - in which there are two fishways : an old, quasi-ineffective "fish ladder" in classic concrete construction and an intact one from the last Harkortsee dredging At the end of the 1990s, the Ruhrverband created “ rough glide ” as a compensatory measure . Through this second fish pass, migratory fish can now get into the Volme again , which was prevented by the weir for decades.
