Dahlhausen lock
The Dahlhausen lock is one of 16 locks that were built by order of King Friedrich II for the Ruhr shipping . It is located on the south bank of the Ruhr in the Dumberg district of the city of Hattingen . The Bochum district of Dahlhausen is on the opposite bank.
history
From 1774 to 1775 the royal chamberlain, Clemens August Freiherr von Elverfeldt, had the lock built out of wood. In 1817 it was rebuilt from wood. The lock walls made of sandstone blocks followed in 1844. The gates are riveted iron sheets. The lock was operated by hand.
In 1988 the lock chamber and the lock house were entered in the Hattingen architectural monument list. The State Environment Agency in Duisburg had the lock gates repaired and is now using the lock for its service vehicles. There is a beer garden at the lock. Another technical monument is not far away, the Dahlhausen floating bridge on pontoons .
In 2013, the Ruhr Regional Association added lock and floating bridge to the route of industrial culture.
