The Hattingen City Museum was opened in 2001 in the Blankenstein district in the old office buildings (built between 1840 and 1904) in the heart of the village in the immediate vicinity of Blankenstein Castle and Gethmann's Garden . The collection was previously in the old town hall in the old town of Hattingen.

The permanent exhibition shows exhibits on the history of Hattingen . These include a mammoth tooth found in Hattingen , a loom and two models of the Blankensteiner Burg including the outer bailey and the medieval Hattingen. Collections of old grandfather clocks , coins, chests, cupboards, pots, dishes, pitchers, flags from rifle clubs, door bars with house slogans and the like bring to mind everyday life in the past.

In addition, temporary exhibitions are organized, for example graphic works by Jörg Immendorff from October 2006 to January 2007 , and portraits of people from Tibet by Walker Xue from December 2007 to January 2008 .

The special offers include workshops for children that are designed to impart knowledge and skills.

The museum is supported by a sponsoring association. The museum is wheelchair accessible.

The German Aphorism Archive is currently still on the first floor of the museum until its holdings have moved to the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf.

The museum has been part of the Route of Industrial Culture since 2019 .
